This course is designed to teach the concepts, testing psychology, reasoning, skills, and timing strategies necessary on both the PSAT and SAT. In the first half of the course I will introduce the students to clear reasoning strategies in each subject area. Students will take a practice test halfway through the course to determine how well they are using the techniques that they learned in the first half of the course. I will then use the practice test results to analyze the patterns in the students’ thinking. Those patterns will drive the curriculum for the second half of the course. We will delve deeply into specific areas that challenge the entire group, especially the concepts that are frequently-tested.
My background:
I grew up in Fort Worth (All Saints '98), and I have been a private SAT and ACT tutor here for the last 17 years. In that time, I have taught over 1,500 students. I have a psychology degree (Dartmouth '02) and a law degree (University of Texas '06). I have created a very individualized apprach to test preparation that combines an awareness of how people learn with an understanding of the logical steps necessary to reach an answer. I work with students on actual tests. Together, we analyze and evaluate how they process true test information.
In addition to teaching my students all of the concepts on the tests, I also make them aware of their own thinking process. I train them to better simplify complicated language and to catch themselves before they commit a careless error. My goal is to impart skills that will serve them throughout their academic life, not just on college admissions tests. My students consistently increase 200-400 points on the SAT and 2-11 points on the ACT.
The minimum requirement for this class series is 12 students.
